"I Told Sunset About You is as inviting as a beautiful cover to a book that you have no idea what it is about."

Peculiar Chef D'oeuvre: Not your ordinary BL Series

It’s a story about two boys who were uncertain about their feelings — an extraordinary journey, I must say. This was utterly different from those other BL stories.

The beautiful story started in Phuket, a small city where its bold culture was palpably shown throughout the series. There were two childhood best friends, Teh and Oh-aew, who were in the same school. They were so close that even their favorites and interests became categorically mutual. During the last few years, they became rivals, and that was the start of everything.

What do you feel when the sun sets? Does it make you feel wistful? Does it make you feel blessed? Does it make you feel grateful? We all love it when the sun says goodbye, but have we ever thought if the sun won’t come back anymore?

These two boys never spoke to each other for years. Their friendship reignited when both of them met at a Chinese-language tutorial school, where they prepped themselves for university admission. After a few weeks of them becoming rivals, only Teh got the chance to embark on a journey at his chosen university. Their friendship became enthralling when Teh helped Oh-Aew learn Chinese.

The cinematography exceeds my expectations. I thought the series would have the same setups and everything as those other BL series that I’ve watched. When I was watching this series, it felt like I was in Phuket too. The color grading matches the emotions that they portray, and that’s outright lit. The consistency of having a vivid yellowish color grade throughout the series gives the audience an idea that the series depicts how effervescent their friendship is. Moreover, it also reflects the fragrant and unswerving culture of Thailand.

Let’s talk about the musical score. We all know that without music, any film or movie would become stodgy. Music is indeed one of the factors why tearjerkers cry even more. Scores are there to add depth of emotions, indicate setting, and allay scene transitions. Well, this series has the best musical scorings among other BL series that I’ve watched. The series is arranged to Thai-Chinese collective cultural attributes in which musical scores were explicitly opted to incline the emotions of those Asian viewers, but it doesn’t limit the fact that the audience should merely be the latter ethnicity. Anyone could feel the vibrant culture of Thailand or China by listening to its musical scores and watching the series. I must say that the scores were gingerly arranged.
