Why is being straight the default?
Drinking your favorite iced coffee, riding a Ferris wheel, and eating oreos will never be the same after watching this coming-of-age romantic comedy movie. You will definitely remember how Jacques and Blue’s discreet exchange of emails turned into a fervent relationship.
Simon is just a normal boy who lives in Georgia with his friends, and all of them are eminently obsessed with drinking coffee. They always trade each other’s thoughts and secrets, from their nonsense dreams to their ultimate crushes; except one, none of them knows that Simon’s gay. Until one day, an unknown guy whose incognito “Blue” shares his online confession of being gay. Simon hastily emails Blue about their mutuality, and that’s when their story prospers. As they exchange emails, a lot of things happen along the way; one of their classmates leaks their emails and tries to blackmail Simon until his secret becomes known to everybody, but what could possibly go wrong?
A great movie wouldn’t be so great without its finest scores. Rob Simonsen, the man behind these beautiful touching soundtracks and scores, made the movie more relatable to the characters’ emotions. You might listen again to the soundtrack where Jacques and Blue exchange emails – on a personal note, it has been my favorite soundtrack, which I keep on listening to on Spotify.
This movie would bore us if they didn’t choose the right actors. Yes, all of them are perfect for this movie. Nick Robinson, who I personally adored when he played Zach in one of the highest-grossing films of all time, Jurassic World. Then there goes Jennifer Garner, who played Jenna and Elektra from my favorite movies 13 Going on 30 and Elektra, respectively. I couldn’t ask for more!
The ending of the film will surely make you shed a tear, so grab your tissues – and popcorn. I won’t spoil you further, but I guarantee you that this could touch your heart whether you’re straight or fabulous. Watch this movie with your family – as Simon and his loving family often do.
